Ajisen Ramen

When we think of China, we think of rice. But in fact, generally speaking, the Chinese eat more noodles than rice. The noodle, with its long, thin shape, is considered to be a symbol representing a long life. Therefore it is "bad luck" to break the noodles before cooking them.
And now, onward to Ajisen Ramen, one in a chain of noodle restaurants.

food- little research

Looks pretty tasty, these bamboo shoots.
ziet er goed uit deze bamboestengels

It's been said that food in China is a feast for the senses. Here, appearance, aroma, texture and of course the flavor are all important. A little research...

Even een klein onderzoekje...

sense of drama

With a proper sense of drama, of course...

Met een beetje gevoel voor drama natuurlijk...

lavish mural

Inside the museum, a lavish mural, accompanied by bombastic music; many photos are taken in front of this wall.

inside the National Museum

The closest public restrooms and airco are inside the National Museum. But it's quite a stunt to get to it: everything is blocked off with ribbons and guarded by soldiers (don't even think about taking a photo of them), so that there is no possible deviation from the exact path that has been set out for you.

Once inside, there follows a whole line of procedures -- passport check, baggage check, even a body frisk -- before you reach the vast entrance and can begin the search for a lavatory. Probably the urgency of nature's call colored my perception somewhat ;-)

Mao's gaze

Under Mao's gaze follows an enormous blast of heat.

peculiar name

A peculiar name, because it can hardly be described as heavenly and peaceful all the time. Today it's mostly just full of people and bathed in sunlight.

Then it's on to Tiananmen Square (named after the

green shoes

And in fact, particularly because the women are zo nice and helpful, i decide to try on a pair of very strange green shoes. Large sizes are virtually non-existent here, so i must remove my socks in order to try them on. This results in rather unusual glances, because as it turns out, it is in extremely poor taste to display your bare feet.
I therefore decide to quickly complete the purchase and get the hell out of there. The packaging that comes with it is wonderfully colorful and very Chinese.

service with a smile 2

To be quite honest, it's a bit of a disappointment; the embroidery here is much less refined, the shoes less elegant, those in the tourist shops in any case. But one tiny store is the exception. The walls are lined with silk and the shoes are displayed like small works of art. Beautifully dressed salesladies provide the finishing touch.
Here is number 2 in the series Service with a Smile:
Hier volgt nummer 2 in de serie -service with a smile-

chinese boy

Little children have a hole in the seat of their pants, or actually no closed seam there. Thanks to this ingenious construction, they can just do their business whenever they feel the urge.
And this lovely Chinese boy is wearing a somewhat longer red jacket (just long enough to cover his behind so don't know about him...) He also has a long braid down his back. This just has to become a drawing, made with the recently acquired Chinese ink and block of red ink.

service with a smile 1

People are so friendly here; that will be a series: Service with a smile. Today's service comes from this friendly guy in the painting supply store.

arrival

And then, at long last, downtown Beijing.
En dan eindelijk downtown Beijing.

Inside the bus it feels like a karaoke bar when our driver anounces each new stop with a mega-echo microphone. (Here there really should be a little soundtrack of this swinging busdriver...)

.
Bus 3 to the centre of Beijing is luckily in China just the same as "our" 3, only the hand-sign to show it might differ a bit.

flight

The journey has begun, with an overbooked flight. Nevertheless, three sweaty hours later i'm really on my way to Beijing. What a combo: wanderlust and fear of flying... not exactly handy. After meditating for the remaining nine hours to overcome my fear, i have a nice landing at bright and shiny Beijing airport.

transferred

Lovelies goes China was transferred to a different address during my trip. That's because China is not amused with blogspot at all! Now, after a slight delay, you can follow the trip here again. Please don't hesitate to respond in the guestbook at the right. Enjoy your trip to China ;-)

De lovelies chinablog was verplaatst naar www.lovelies-travel.com. Blogspot is helaas geblokkeerd in China. Reageren staat vrij, graag zelfs! Per artikel of in het gastenboek. Enjoy your trip to China;-)

My favorite 'chinese-summer-shoes' from Milano.
Hope i'l find them again in Beijing because these ones are kind of wasted...

To get in the (chinese) mood, i'm starting to draw some chinese objects, stuff i find at home. For instance this Jasmine tea, never tasted it but ooh i love this can.
