lotus

hand-painted

I once read somewhere that even as late as 1985 most of the billboards in China were still hand-painted. Being familiar with these from my travels in India – they were often truly stunning -- i'm quite curious to see what the current billboards here look like. Alas, not many painted ones. There are many different types, fortunately also posters with the typically Chinese lotus flower or peony. These are such important symbols in China and so beautiful to paint.

leave light...

Eating everything is considered impolite, so satisfied but without stomach aches, we leave the restaurant .
Alles opeten is weer onbeleefd dus voldaan en zonder buikpijn verlaten we het restaurant.

dates in honey sauce

It's very normal here to order a lot and to share everything, so the rest of the meal can begin: Peking Duck with sesame, Peking Duck with asparagus (which actually turns out to be plain old green beans) and delicious dates in honey sauce.

mini-course

The serving lady explains to us that we should eat this with a bit of sugar; mmm, this is indeed a treat. Next, she gives us a mini-course in pancake-stuffing. We do our best to fill the pancakes and to eat with chopsticks -- she took the spoon away again -- only to discover that the Chinese people at the neighboring table are simply eating with their hands...

measly piece

But then just a measly piece of skin on a plate is given to us.

chef at the table

The menu consists of nothing but Peking Duck, but then prepared in every imaginable manner.
We begin with Peking Duck with chives and small pancakes. The chef ceremoniously slices the duck at the table. It certainly looks promising...

all eating

Not long thereafter comes a beautiful hall with walls covered with mosaics, enormous chandeliers and many, many people who are all eating.

your number is...

After we are led through the restaurant by various girls wearing uniform and impressive headsets, we enter an enormous waiting room with rows of chairs, almost as if it's a movie theater. Here you get your number.

poor ducklings

Right away we are confronted with the poor ducklings, well actually they are ducks, waiting to be prepared. The heads are still on the bodies. This is necessary (necessary?!) because a pump is used to inflate the duck so that the skin comes loose from the rest of the body. Hopefully after having lived a long and happy life...

elevator-woman

The restaurant is on the fourth floor, the woman by the elavator points the way.

Quanjade Roast Duck restaurant

A truly unusual thing as far as food is concerned is the Quanjade Roast Duck restaurant. Peking Duck originated in the northeastern region of China and was the favorite dish of the imperial Ming family, which lived in the Forbidden City.

Service with a smile 6

And here is Service with a Smile nr. 6.

En de -service met een smile - nr 6

spring roll

We stick to the more familiar stuff and order something like sweet potatoes. dumplings and spring rolls. The spring roll is often eaten here for Chinese New Year, because it resembles a bar of gold, which is a symbol of wealth.

shopping mall dinner

Another place where you can eat very well is at one of the many gigantic shopping malls. We find a little restaurant with an interior like a nightclub: plenty of shiny black, extravagant chandeliers and an extensive menu card as thick as a book.

The RBT-girl wasn't allowed to have her photo taken...

RBT

There are also chains here that would probably do quite well in Amsterdam. The RBT, for instance, with snacks and especially its tasty juices and drinks. Although i'm not sure about the strange jungle seating...

starbucks

Beijing is the capital of China and a real metropolis. So there are also plenty of Western chains like Starbucks, where you can score a yummy cafe latte...
