super-short

And then back again with the spanking new, super-short (by Beijing standards) metro line.

lighting

There is beautiful lighting everywhere, the Chinese are really good at that. Alas, that never comes across so well in a photo...Overal is prachtige verlichting, daar zijn de chinezen goed in.

watercube

And the Beijing National Aquatics Center, also known as the Water Cube.
En het Beijing National Aquatics Center, ook wel bekend als Water Cube.

"Bird's Nest"

Such as one project that quickly acquired the nickname "Bird's Nest", thanks to its ingenious steel rib structure, which is strongly evocative of the woven twigs of a bird nest. It measures approximately 330 meters in length and is around 220 meters wide and 70 meters high.

Olympic Games

Whatever impact the 2008 Olympic Games had on Beijing, in any case they were responsible for the creation of a new urban zone on the northern side of the city, filled with architectural wonders.

leaving the forbidden city

On leaving the Forbidden City, you suddenly find yourself in a another world and a whole other part of Beijing.

You also nearly get trampled on by the tour groups, each with their own guide. These tourguides can be found everywhere in the City, with their colorful little flags and blaring megaphones. Faithfully followed by large groups of Chinese wearing colored caps.

But it certainly is beautiful as well, especially if you've seen the movie The Last Emperor, which was filmed here. The film brought everything to life, so you could get an even better idea of the wealth and the spirit of that era.

need a plan...

For 500 years, the Forbidden City was totally inaccessible, except for the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties and their imperial courts. It is the largest and most well-preserved complex of buildings in China. One thing for sure: it certainly is huge. It resembles a Russian matryoshka doll; each time you go through a gate, you find yourself in a new courtyard with a set of similar-looking buildings.

photo opportunity

A new attempt to enter the Forbidden City. This is a favorite spot for a Photo Opportunity with your loved one, grandmother, father, child, etc.

red under

The color red stands for good fortune in China, and that's why it's the predominant color for brides. Not just her wedding dress, but also the bride's underwear must be red...

Brides in Red

Standing there unexpectedly, smack dab in the middle of Beijing's commercial district, almost as if it'd been misplaced... a serene and peaceful church: St. Joseph's. And standing in front of the church are a number of brides in red. Together with an entire film set and photo crew.
Midden in het drukke commerciƫle district in Beijing staat opeens, bijna misplaatst, een heel serene rustgevende kerk. De St. Joseph's church. En daarvoor een aantal rode bruidjes. Met hele filmset en fotocrew.

watch out

There are surprisingly few genuinely Asian models on the billboards and posters, such as this one for a brand of watches. Speaking of which, giving a watch as a gift can actually be a major faux-pas. The words "giving a clock" in Chinese apparently sound the same as "scaring somebody to death".
