For 500 years, the Forbidden City was totally inaccessible, except for the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties and their imperial courts. It is the largest and most well-preserved complex of buildings in China. One thing for sure: it certainly is huge. It resembles a Russian matryoshka doll; each time you go through a gate, you find yourself in a new courtyard with a set of similar-looking buildings.
De verboden stad is 500 jaar lang niet toegankelijk geweest, behalve dan voor de keizers van de Ming en Qing dynastie met hun hofhouding. Het is het grootste en bestbewaarde complex van gebouwen in China. Groot is het zeker, het lijkt wel zo'n russische matroesjka. Iedere keer als je een poort doorgaat volgt er weer een nieuw plein met op elkaar lijkende gebouwen.
